MBB Australia Graduate: What the Hours and Pay Actually Look Like

Consulting is not one industry. It is five economic models wearing the same job title. An MBB Business Analyst and a mid-tier advisory graduate both say "I work in consulting" at a family dinner, but they sit on completely different clocks, pay and career trajectories.

The hours are not a rostering accident. They are the moat. A firm billing a partner's time at half a million dollars a week to a Fortune 500 chief executive cannot run a 40 hour week. A firm doing mid-market operations work for a regional client does not carry the fee or the risk to justify burning its juniors out. Same title, same LinkedIn headline, completely different job.

Why do MBB firms work so many more hours than everyone else?

It comes down to what the client is paying for and how much is riding on the answer. McKinsey, BCG and Bain sell judgement to boards and chief executives on decisions worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The fee reflects that, and so does the expectation.

A mid-tier or Big 4 advisory engagement is usually narrower in scope, lower risk, and lower fee. RSM doing mid-market operations work is a real, useful, well-paid job. It is just not underwriting the same stakes, so it does not extract the same hours.

Most graduates do not model this before accepting an offer: the hours are downstream of the fee, and the fee is downstream of the risk. You cannot pick MBB-level pay and prestige with Big 4-level hours. The two are the same lever.

What are the actual hours by firm?

Here is the firm-by-firm hours breakdown, sourced from junior consultant data across the market.

Firm Hours per week
McKinsey and Company 80
Bain and Company 76
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) 75
Oliver Wyman 71
L.E.K. Consulting 70
Kearney 70
Strategy& (PwC) 65
Monitor Deloitte 64
EY-Parthenon 62
Accenture Strategy 62
Simon-Kucher and Partners 60
Altman Solon 58
PwC (core advisory) 51
Deloitte (core advisory) 50
EY (core advisory) 50
FTI Consulting 50
RSM 42

The pattern holds across every firm on this list. MBB and Tier 1 strategy houses sit at the top of the hours table, mid-tier strategy sits in the middle, and Big 4 core advisory and mid-market firms sit at the bottom. Nobody is lying to you in the recruiting deck. The hours are public information if you know where to look, and they track the fee model almost exactly.

What does MBB actually pay in Australia?

Here is the salary progression at MBB and Tier 1 strategy houses in Australia.

Level Duration Base salary (AUD) Typical bonus Total comp (AUD)
Business Analyst (Yr 1-2) 2 yrs $95k-$130k 10-25% $105k-$163k
Senior BA / Consultant 2-3 yrs $135k-$175k 15-30% $155k-$228k
Manager / Engagement Manager 2-3 yrs $200k-$260k 20-40% $240k-$364k
Senior Manager / Associate Partner 2-4 yrs $280k-$400k 30-60% $364k-$640k

Big 4 and tech consulting comp typically tracks 10-25% lower than these figures at junior levels, and mid-tier advisory tracks 25-40% lower again. That gap compounds every year you stay. It is also why the hours gap does not close on its own. The firms paying more expect more, and the firms paying less do not have the margin to demand an MBB-style week.

What WAM do you actually need to get into MBB?

MBB and Tier 1 strategy houses (McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Strategy&, L.E.K., Kearney, Roland Berger, OC&C, ZS Associates, Simon-Kucher) sit in the "Very Hard" difficulty band, which means a WAM of 78-85 plus at a Go8 university is the realistic entry bar. Big 4 strategy arms and Tier 1 tech consulting (Accenture) sit in the "Hard" band at 72-78 WAM. Mid-tier advisory (BDO, Grant Thornton) sits at 65-72 WAM in the "Moderate" band.

A 70 WAM student is not competitive for a McKinsey Business Analyst seat, but is a realistic candidate for mid-tier advisory or a Tier 2 strategy house, and those are legitimate entry points into a consulting career, not a consolation prize.

Does the WAM bar change what firm you should target?

It should. Applying to MBB with a 68 WAM burns an application slot the screening will filter out before a human reads it. The better sequence for a non-Very-Hard WAM is Big 4 strategy or a Tier 2 house first, two to three years of real deal and case experience, then a lateral move into MBB once the WAM cutoff is no longer the gate. Recruiters weight demonstrated case performance heavily once you are inside the industry.

Prior experience helps regardless of your WAM band: consulting club leadership, case competition wins, Big 4 vacationer programs, and the firm-run early-insight programs (McKinsey Achievement Award, BCG's Bridge to BCG, Bain's ADvantage) all move the needle. Background does not have to be commerce either. Engineering, law, science and PhD graduates are all strongly represented at MBB.

What happens after a few years in consulting?

The exit paths are part of the same trade. From an MBB Business Analyst seat, the main exits are corporate strategy at an ASX 50 company (2-3 years, $160k-$280k AUD), private equity (3-4 years, MBB experience preferred, $200k-$400k plus AUD), or a strategy or operations role in tech (2-4 years, $160k-$300k AUD). A PE fund hiring a former MBB analyst is buying the case reps built during those 80 hour weeks, not just the firm name on the CV.

FAQ

Why does McKinsey work more hours than RSM if they are both consulting?

Because they are not selling the same thing. McKinsey bills partner judgement to boards and chief executives on decisions worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and the fee and expectation reflect that. RSM does mid-market operations work at a lower fee and lower risk profile, so it does not extract the same hours from its juniors. Same job title, different economic model.

What WAM do you need for MBB in Australia?

MBB and Tier 1 strategy houses sit in the "Very Hard" band, which means 78-85 plus WAM at a Go8 university for a realistic shot. Big 4 strategy and Tier 1 tech consulting sit lower, at 72-78 WAM. Mid-tier advisory is the most accessible, at 65-72 WAM.

How much does an MBB graduate earn in Australia?

A Business Analyst in Year 1-2 earns a base of $95k-$130k AUD plus a 10-25% bonus, for total comp of $105k-$163k AUD. That climbs through Senior Consultant, Manager and Senior Manager, reaching $280k-$400k AUD base by the Senior Manager / Associate Partner level.

Is Big 4 consulting a worse job than MBB?

Not worse, different. Big 4 core advisory works roughly 50 hours a week against MBB's 75-80, and pays 10-25% lower at junior levels. For someone who values hours and stability over the top-end ceiling, Big 4 is a legitimate long-term choice. For someone chasing lifetime earnings and the fastest path to PE or corporate strategy exits, MBB's extra hours are buying something specific.

Can you get into MBB without a Go8 university degree or a high WAM?

Directly, it is difficult. The realistic path is Big 4 strategy or a Tier 2 strategy house first, building two to three years of case and deal experience, then lateralling into MBB once your demonstrated performance matters more than your undergraduate WAM. Case competition wins and the firms' own early-insight programs also help close the gap.

Which consulting firms have the best hours in Australia?

RSM (42 hours), Deloitte, EY and PwC core advisory, and FTI Consulting (all around 50 hours) sit at the lighter end. Altman Solon and Simon-Kucher sit in the high 50s to 60s. MBB and Tier 1 strategy houses (McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Oliver Wyman, L.E.K., Kearney) sit at 70-80 hours, the highest in the market.
